Monkeyland

Monkeyland presently houses 18 different primate species, 11 being free roaming in the main 12 hectare Monkeyland forest while another 7 are in large cages within in the main forest.

The free roaming primates that you will be able to see in Monkeyland include two Lemur species; the Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) and the Ringtail Lemur (Lemur catta), 2 Langur species; Spectacled Langur (Trachypithecus obscurus) and the Hanuman Langur (Semnopithecus entellus), Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya), Bolivian Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri boliviensis), Geoffroy's Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), Tufted or Brown Capuchin (Cebus apella), Red-backed Bearded Saki (Chiropotes chiropotes), Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) and Monkeyland's only ape species the White Handed or Lar Gibbon (Hylobates lar).

The Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus) is closely related to the Bolivian Squirrel Monkey so these live in a large cage within the main forest to prevent possible hybridization.

Being nocturnal, the Douroucoulis or Owl Monkey (Aotus trivirgatus) is also housed in a cage within the main forest.

The remaining 5 species live in the 2,5 hectare Birds of Eden, they are the shy, elusive and nocturnal Bush Baby or Lesser Galago (Galago mohoi) and Greater Galago (Otolemur crassicaudatus) as well as the miniature Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), Cotton top Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) and a family of ever present Golden-handed Tamarins (Saguinus midas).
