Plaisir de Merle Manor House
Introducing the ideal venue for business or pleasure... A historic manor house dating back to 1764. Situated on the Plaisir de Merle wine estate , our Manor House is a cultural treasure of the Cape winelands and has been restored to its former splendour to serve as a Franschhoek guest house, a dedicated small conference or break-away facility, a versatile function venue for weddings, renewal of vows and special functions.
The Manor House has been tastefully co-ordinated with fashionable furnishings by the dynamic design team from Visser Kapperer de Bruin Architects of Stellenbosch who were also the restoration architects. The end result bears testimony to a conscious endeavour to forsake grandeur in favour of unaffected sincerity with a flair that underlies classical refinement. Fashionable and co-ordinated with flair, the Manor House's interior features an elegant and eclectic rendition of old and new. The selection of furniture in the Cape Art Nouveau and Art deco, ball-and-claw and retro styles are reminiscent of our estate's diverse cultural heritage and progressive approach to winemaking. Fashionable furnishings make an unaffected, yet classically refined, statement. Trappings of the past are brought closer to the present in the dining room or 'galderij' with its traditional wall cupboard ('muurkas') and yellowwood ceiling beams. A long dining table comfortably seats 36 guests, and with a slight change in configuration can seat up to 40 guests.
The splendid Plaisir de Merle Manor House is available as a single booking only. The Manor House can accommodate up to eight guests and is the ideal venue for the wedding party. Breakfast is included in the price. You can choose from the following bedroom options.
Map and Directions to Plaisir de Merle Manor House
From the N1:
- Take the N1 from Cape Town in the direction of Paarl.
- Pass the first turn-off to Stellenbosch; stay on the N1 till you see the Klapmuts sign and exit left off of the N1 when you see this sign.
- At the first stop street, turn right. You will pass Butterfly World on the left.
- At the four way stop at Klapmuts head straight, you will cross a little railway bridge.
- Then take the first turn to the left at the sign for Franschhoek.
- Stay on that road to Franschhoek. You will pass Backsberg, Glen Carlou, Cowlin Wines, Drakensig Wines, Rupert and Rothschild.
- Watch out for the sharp turn in road and turn right at the T-junction.
- Continue on until you see Simondium Motors on the left on the right hand side of the road you will see the entrance gates to the Plaisir de Merle Wine Estate.
